One of the most common questions I hear from new clients is a simple one: what actually happens in a hypnotherapy session? It is a fair thing to wonder about. Most people have only seen hypnosis on television or on a stage, and that is nothing like the work I do in my rooms in Mt Eden. So here is what you can really expect.
We start with a chat
Your first session begins with a conversation, not a trance. We talk about what has brought you in, what you would like to change, and what you have already tried. There is no pressure and nothing you have to get right. I have been helping people for over 38 years, and whatever you are dealing with, I have almost certainly worked with someone facing something similar.
This is also your chance to ask me anything. Many people arrive with a few worries about hypnosis, and it helps to clear those up before we begin.
Going into hypnosis
When we move into the hypnosis itself, you simply relax. You stay aware the whole time, you can hear my voice, and you remain in control. Most people describe it as a pleasant, deeply relaxed state, a little like those few minutes before you drift off to sleep. Your conscious mind settles, and your subconscious becomes more open to positive suggestion and to new ideas.
This is where the real change happens. We work gently with the patterns and feelings that have been holding you back, and we begin to replace them with more helpful ones.
You take something home
I usually make a recording during your session, tailored to you and to the changes you want to make. You can listen to it at home to reinforce the work, and clients often tell me this makes a real difference between sessions.
Afterwards, most people feel calm, clear and pleasantly relaxed. Some changes are noticeable straight away, while others build over the following days as your subconscious keeps doing its work.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on you and on what you would like to achieve. Some people need only one or two sessions, others prefer to come back a few times to build on their progress. We talk about this together so you always know where you stand.
If you have been thinking about giving hypnotherapy a try, the easiest first step is a free initial consultation. There is no obligation, just a chance to meet, ask your questions, and see whether it feels right for you.
